Once again it has rained in Montalcino, but not much.
On Tuesday, 14 January, 15 mm. And Friday, 17 January, 10 mm in the afternoon.
Saturday and Sunday were cloudy but it did not rain while in northern Tuscany, in Florence and Massa Carrara, it rained a lot, not to mention Liguria and Emilia-Romagna where the rainfall caused enormous damage.
The problem is not the rain but rather the temperature. Because of a scirocco wind, we have had temperatures that are much higher than the seasonal average.
Sunday at 1 p.m., we had 18° C.; craziness for the countryside.
This year, it still has not gotten cold, which is necessary to block the vegetation and send the plants into vegetative stasis. It also helps to “kill” insects and harmful spores.
The meteorologists are saying that the cold will arrive in February. We are hoping that this will be the case.
In 1997, we had a mild winter and spring and in April, temperatures suddenly fell drastically, thus causing grave harm to the vegetation that was already 10 cm long.
In the vineyards, we have already begun to prune the vines. We could not wait because the many hectares we have to prune do not allow us to wait any longer. Otherwise, we would have waited.
