Another great place to eat, and another of our favorites in Sant'Angelo in Colle our village, is Trattoria Il Leccio. The word "leccio" means "holm oak" in Italian, from the Latin "ilex", and, in fact, the toponym Montalcino comes from a combination of "monte" or "mount" and "ilex", in other words, the "holm oak mount". People from Montalcino are called, in fact, "ilcinesi" from the Latin "ilex".
Il Leccio also serves traditional Tuscan cusine but you will find some classic Italian dishes as well and a great wine list, with a lot of wines from many different Brunello producers, including Il Poggione, of course.
My family and I enjoyed lunch at Trattoria Il Leccio this past Sunday, Oct 30, 2011. We were traveling between Castello Banfi and Montalcino and saw the little town of Sant'Angelo and decided to stop and look. It was a delightful find! The town is precious, quaint, and stunningly beautiful. The views are spectacular! We sat down at Il Leccio in the town square, the kids ran around a bit, but when the food arrived we were all surprised at the quality and taste of all the dishes. The pastas, ragu, lasagna, pork tenderloin, pecorino cheese plate, wine of course, everything was truly remarkable! The town and Il Leccio are gems! I was pleasantly surprised to also find the family enoteca and cafe in Montalcino as well! We've lived and toured around Italy for over a year, and Il Leccio is one of the very best.
